The Shrewsbury Accountant, Nigel from TaxAssist, shares some recent findings about how businesses use the internet

Nearly one in four UK businesses doesn’t have a company website – and around a third of those firms have no plans to get one.

These are the principal conclusions of a new survey from The Made Simple Group, in association with Startups, Microsoft, Huddlebuy, Business 2012 and TaxAssist Accountants, exploring the online nous of Britain’s business community.

The survey also found that the cost of web development is a major deterrent for many firms; of those who admitted they don’t have a website, more than half cited money as a key concern.

Furthermore, the researchers discovered that only 8% of companies update their website more than once a day. Over one in six respondents said they don’t update their site at all.

The study was based on responses from over 2,000 businesses from across the UK.

For more information, check out this infographic on the findings.

An interesting VAT question answered by Nigel Lomax of TaxAssist Accountants in Shrewsbury

Here is an interesting recent question:

Q: I am about to complete my VAT return for the quarter ended 31 March, and I fear that my turnover has crept to over £1.35m- which is the threshold for cash accounting for VAT. Despite best efforts, my customers are taking longer and longer to pay, so the VAT on my debtors is about £40k on average.

If I have to pay the VAT liability on an accruals basis, the bank account would exceed its overdraft limit and I’ve only just had a review so I don’t think we’d get an extension. Is there anything we can do?

A: When you leave the cash accounting scheme, you may choose either to:

  • account for all your outstanding VAT due in the period in which you stop using the scheme. This may be simpler but could have a serious effect on your cash flow if the amounts of the VAT on your debtors is high
  • or opt for a further six months in which to account for the outstanding VAT.

Please note that you cannot opt for a further six months in which to account for the outstanding VAT if:

  • HMRC has withdrawn use of the scheme from you, or
  • the value of your taxable supplies has exceeded £1,600,000 and the value of your supplies made in the previous three months totalled more than £1,350,000

Nigel from TaxAssist in Shrewsbury gives some information about the New Enterprise Allowance

On 5 October, 2011 the Secretary of State announced that the Government will give extra help to unemployed people who want to start their own business through the New Enterprise Allowance (NEA).

The Allowance will be available to Jobseekers Allowance (JSA) customers who have been claiming JSA for more than 6 months.

Customers will get access to a business mentor who will provide guidance and support as they develop their business idea and through the early stages of trading. Once a customer can demonstrate they have a viable business proposition with growth potential they will be able to claim financial support which will consist of a weekly allowance payable at a level broadly equivalent to their JSA payments for 3 months, and then at half that rate for a further 3 months. And if they need start-up capital, they may also be able to access a loan up to £1,000 to help with their start-up costs.

The total package of support could be worth around £2,000 to each unemployed person who wants to start their own business.

The Department of Work and Pensiosn are now trailblazing the NEA in Merseyside before rolling out into the remaining target areas from April and then nationally from autumn this year.

More details can be found on the web-site below, which also includes information about Enterprise Clubs.
